IT Job Descriptions - Comments

Working as an IT manager requires knowledge of both technology and business practices. As in many other IT job descriptions, the duties of an IT manager will vary depending on the work environment, company size, experience level and other factors. Earning an undergraduate degree is a common requirement in many IT job descriptions, but managers may also need an advanced degree in order to be competitive in the field. Since an IT manager job description involves dealing with a wide range of issues, having excellent people skills, an understanding of business management, and technical expertise are all equally important. Technical expertise is often gained through previous professional experience, working in a related information technology position.

A recent PayScale IT Job Survey showed a similar career path for many IT managers. Prior to working as IT managers, many were employed as Network Administrators. Five years after their IT manager positions, most went on to become IT Directors.
