Chief Executive Officer Job Description - Comments

Since he or she is the highest-ranking officer in a corporation or company, a chief executive officer job description includes overall business strategy, top-level decision making and oversight of business activities. In most cases, chief executive officers serve directly above other private sector executives such as a Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and executive vice president. Part of a chief executive officer job description is managing these executives in a comprehensive strategy for the whole company, which these executives will in turn impart to their respective departments. Most of the time, a chief executive officer will also serve as chair of the board or as president of the company; however, either or both of these positions may be held by a different person depending on the individual company's structure, so they are not always part of a chief executive officer job description.

Chief executive officer is a high-stress job requiring quick, decisive choices on a multitude of subjects. A chief executive officer must constantly make decisions on which tasks to tackle personally and which to delegate, work to keep both his/her executive staff and stockholders happy, and take responsibility for new directions which may affect the entire company. It is a position that often requires long hours and travel. A chief executive officer job description will vary depending on such factors as company size, reporting structure, or whether the company is privately or publicly held. Whether for a company with five employees or 5000 employees, however, a chief executive officer's job description will include leadership, management, and strategy. Even though the specific duties included in a CEO job description may not be commonly known among employees, those who think it is a cushy job have not walked a mile in a chief executive officer's shoes. With members of the board and stockholders holding high expectations for improvement and profitability, high pressure is an unwritten facet of any chief executive officer's job description. Fortunately, for the chief executive officers of most successful or growing companies, seeing the business they've spent years cultivating start to take off is just as big a reward as any CEO Salary.
