When Mrs. Obama called on Bell during the Q-and-A portion, ABC News reports that Bell passed on the resume instead of asking a question.
"My dad's been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his resume," she said.
"Oh my goodness," said Mrs. Obama, hugging Bell.
"Well, it's a little private, but she's doing something for her dad, right?" she said to the audience. ABC News notes that the first lady took the resume with her when she left the event.
Bell's father is not alone in his plight. As of last week, Think Progress reports that 3.7 million Americans were unemployed for 27 weeks or more. That number has declined by 837,000 this year. The long-term unemployed make up about 36 percent of unemployed workers.
For Americans who cross the Rubicon into long-term unemployment, prospects are grim. According to a paper from the Brookings Institution, during the years 2008 and 2011, only 11 percent of workers unemployed for 27 weeks or longer returned to full-time unemployment. Twenty-four percent found part-time work; 35 percent stopped looking altogether.
