New Research Center Homepage, Career Path Charts and Some Cleanup – Thai Release

We’re releasing some features today that we’ve long-wanted to give our first-time users: a better landing page for our Career and Salary Research Center, and a better visualization of career paths based on our GigZig data platform.

The team at PayScale has been hard at work for the past few weeks designing some snazzy new upgrades to our Research Center. Now it’s easier than ever to use PayScale data to research thousands of job titles.

Career Paths

You may have never heard of Matthew Henry Phineas Riall Sankey, but he designed the basics for one of our favorite visualizations ever: the Sankey diagram. In this release, we’ve built a Sankey diagram showing the paths that real people have taken through their career. You can use these charts to help plot your next career moves, or just satisfy your questions about “what’s next?”

Here is an example for a Mechanical Engineer Career Path:

Career and Salary Research Center Home Page

As long as most of us have been working at PayScale, we’ve wanted to improve the experience on the “home page” of the Career and Salary Research Center. Today’s release includes a major overhaul of this page, providing more links to important jobs, employers, schools and more.

Here is what it looks like now:

Cleanup

We’re big fans of experimentation here at PayScale. Sometimes our experiments are awesome successes (you’ll be seeing a new header across all of PayScale soon), and some are less successful. A couple of our less successful experiments are being removed:

  • Schools Reviews in the Research Center.
  • Employer Question and Answers.

We’ve also done a ton of bug-fixing and little improvements around the site. There are too many to list out, but we’ve knocked out small 20+ issues affecting you guys.

The End

We’d love to hear your thoughts about the latest improvements. Do you think the new Research Center home page is better? Or, it is annoying? Do you think the Sankey diagram is confusing? Let us know!

Also, today is my last day at PayScale… so you’ll be hearing from someone new in the future. So long, and thanks for all the blogs 🙂
