So you've swapped your traditional work setup for a standing desk, and now you'll never have to worry about the litany of health complaints linked to sitting at work for hours on end, right? Well, sort of.
In the last few years, we've been bombarded with warnings about the dangers of sitting too much. We've heard that even if you exercise, prolonged periods of sitting can kill you. We know that, even if do we manage to escape premature sitting-induced death, those of us who sit too much are more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes. We've even heard sitting compared with some of the unhealthiest "habits" out there – most notably, that sitting is the new smoking.
Bad news, standing-desk fans: according to a study from Exeter University and University College London, you're getting sore feet for nothing. After following 5,000 people over the course of 16 years, researchers determined that standing desks are no better for your health than standard ones. Being still, they contend, whether standing or sitting, is bad for your health.
American workers spend 21 hours a day being sedentary, and only three hours being active, according to research from Ergotron and research firm Research Now. In fact, 86 percent of respondents said that they sit "all day, every day," despite the fact that 70 percent said they hate sitting. Worst of all, more than half of those surveyed said that when they do get up, they use "getting food" as an excuse. Given that most companies aren't going to shell out for treadmill desks for everyone, is there any way to minimize the amount of sitting we're doing?
