If you are looking for the best value college in Maine, PayScale's College ROI Report can help you evaluate schools based on their financial return on investment. To do this, we calculate the net 20-year ROI and use it to compare colleges in our Maine College ROI Report rankings.

We arrived at the net 20-year ROI or return on investment by determining how much high school graduates typically earn in a 20-year period after graduation. We took the responses from alumni from each college who took the PayScale Salary Survey to determine their median 20-year earnings. We subtracted tuition and other educational costs, and then arrived at the net 20-year ROI for each school.

This list will help you determine which school offers the better return on college education in Maine. Since we only include colleges for which we have a statistically significant data set, our list of the best value colleges in Maine only contains three schools and is therefore pretty straightforward. In first and second place is the University of Maine at Orono. We have two different numbers because one set of statistics is for in-state tuition, and the other set is for out-of-state tuition.

In the first case, students who live on campus pay $92,000 to attend this school. This amount is the lowest in the state. Those who graduate enjoy a net 20-year ROI of $260,200. If they receive financial aid, the net 20-year ROI increases to $294,000.

Out-of-state students who live on campus also do very well even though their education costs are much higher ($157,000). Upon graduation, these former students enjoy a net 20-year ROI equal to $195,200. Those who receive financial aid have a net 20-year ROI of $229,000 after graduation. Quite a few notable people graduated from the University of Maine, including authors Stephen King and Tabitha King. This illustrious list also includes U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe and former football player Mike Flynn. The University of Maine participates in hockey and has several graduates who played professionally, including Jack Capuano, Mike Dunham and Gustav Nyquist.

The third highest college return on investment in Maine comes from the private Husson University. Husson alumni earn a 20-year net ROI of $193,200. With financial aid, the net 20-year ROI is equal to $217,700.

The last school on the PayScale.com list of the best value colleges Maine is another public school, so it actually occupies both the fourth and fifth spots for in-state and out-of-state tuition. At the University of Southern Maine, in-state tuition is lower, so those who live on campus pay $95,000 for five years. The net 20-year ROI is equal to $168,000 for this population. Out-of-state students who live on campus pay $142,800 for a net 20-year ROI that is equal to $120,200.

PayScale's Maine College ROI Report makes it easy to think about education in terms of college return on investment. The value of education can't only be measured in dollars, but by thinking about the financial implications of the cost of attending college, you can choose a school that makes sense for you.
