Social service (SOC Codes 11-9150.00 Social and Community Service Managers; 21-0000.00 Community and Social Service Occupations) jobs all involve helping others. These workers support communities and individuals with a variety of issues, from substance abuse and health problems to troubled marriages and spiritual questions. While these counselors, social workers, and clergy can work directly for the government (and would, therefore, not be included in The PayScale Index), many work for the private, non-profit organizations covered in this report, in industries like healthcare, social assistance and other service industries.
The SOC (Standard Occupational Classification) system is used by Federal statistical agencies to classify workers into occupational categories for the purpose of collecting, calculating, or disseminating data. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The PayScale Index tracks quarterly changes in total cash compensation for full-time, private industry employees in the United States. In addition to a national index, it includes separate indices for specific industries, metropolitan areas, job categories, and company sizes. The PayScale Index uses 2006 average total cash compensation as a baseline.
