Job Description for Commercial Pilot

Most of the time, commercial pilots work for airlines. They must ensure that flight operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. They must initiate preflight planning by analyzing the weather and checking aircraft performance. They must be competent. They must comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations at all times. They must also follow their company's safety guidelines and procedures. They must make sure they operate the airplane in accordance with the operations manual. They must be reliable. They must follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). They may be required to be involved in flight safety investigations.

Employers require that candidates have at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. They must have completed the required flying hours. In addition, candidates must have Current Commercial Pilot’s License from the Federal Aviation Administration. They must also have Airline Transport Pilot Licenses (ATPL) and certifications. They are often required to possess the Federal Aviation Administration Class II Medical Certificate. Employers prefer candidates who have significant work experience as commercial pilots.

As the captain of an aircraft, commercial pilots must have strong leadership skills. They must be able to build strong teamwork. They must be able to work under pressure. They must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. They must keep accurate flight-related records, including engine maintenance, passenger data, and trip papers. They must ensure that appropriate manuals and equipment are on board. They must interact with all employees in a professional and courteous manner. They must attend required training classes, workshops, and conferences.

Commercial Pilot Tasks
  • Safely, legally and consistently operate aircraft.
  • Perform flight operations tasks including aircraft takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approach and landing.
  • Maintain knowledge of assigned aircraft equipment type and current operational procedures.
  • Operate, monitor, analyze and appropriately react to all aircraft operational functions.
  • Coordinate tasks to permit a number of functions such as flight fueling, loading and passenger handling.
