A porter performs basic cleaning and maintenance duties for their organization. They are typically employed by companies that have grounds that need to be maintained; this includes apartment complexes, retirement communities, country clubs, golf courses, and airports, among others. A porter generally perform janitorial duties, as well as helps solve some maintenance-related problems. They are expected to maintain the area under their supervision, keeping it clean of trash and other debris. They might also perform some basic maintenance duties such as changing light bulbs and fixing doors and windows.
A porter may also be responsible for ensuring cleaning and maintenance equipment is organized and safely stored. They must maintain safe and clean areas and report any safety concerns or violations as soon as possible. Other tasks performed by porters may include landscaping duties such as mowing grass and watering plants, as well as interacting with residents, customers, and fellow employees. Porters almost always work outdoors and in a variety of weather conditions.
A high school diploma or equivalent is usually the minimum educational requirement for this position. Most porter jobs also require some experience in a similar position as well. Porters are expected to work with a multitude of cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment, and they may also need some knowledge of tools and machinery used by a particular organization.
- Provide customers with directions and information on attractions in the surrounding area.
- Move luggage to and from customer’s room and vehicle.
- Greet customers, guide them to check-in or their room and explain amenities and services.
- Bring room service orders to customers and ensure customer needs are met.
