Phlebotomist Reviews

Q: What is it like working as a Phlebotomist?

Phlebotomist in Perth:
"For the love of it."
Pros: I get to meet lots of people, even if only for a short time, and provide a bit of reassurance that they are being well taken care of. People are often very anxious after they have seen doctor, scared of needles, or are worried about the results. I am able to do my job efficiently and perform each procedure with a minimum of discomfort. Some of the clients are regulars and it is nice to be able to provide good service. At Specialist Diagnostic Services I am glad I have an understanding manager who helps me schedule my work rosters around my study and family. The rosters are able to be flexible but regular. Even though I mostly work on my own, there is still a feeling of being part of a team both between collectors and other workers such as couriers and laboratory staff.
Cons: Patients are impatient. Some patients take more time than others and people who have waited to see doctor do not want to wait to see me. Sometimes when it is busy, and the flow of patients is continuous it is difficult to process all specimens, pack for transport, answer the phone, bleed patients, and be able to get the occasional bathroom break. Sometimes it is frustrating that doctor doesn't bother to explain a little about the tests to patients e.g. I ask for a urine specimen and patient says "they just went". The pay is less than the cleaner who mops the floors gets even though I have very specialised skills and take blood from people who I know are HIV, hepatitis B or C positive every day. It is frustrating when the company doesn't listen when we suggest things to streamline our workload - e.g. Photocopying forms for serial and deferred tests, instead of writing all the patients details out and tests requested repeatedly a noted photocopy would be sufficient & reduce error.
