Job Description for SAP Basis Administrator

A SAP Basis administrator's work deals with the functionality of SAP business software. This software is what many businesses are using for their financial accounting and reporting. The SAP Basis administrator is responsible for the installation, configuring, and maintenance of SAP systems, including performance upgrades, security upgrades and purchased add-ons.

When a company first purchases a version from SAP, a SAP Basis administrator will fine-tune it to the companies needs. The company will need the software to be configured to store the amount of information required to work on their servers and networks. SAP will need to be integrated with other supporting systems to reduce end user disruption.

Once the software is installed, the SAP administrator will monitor, maintain, and continue to configure the software so that it will run at maximum performance. It will be expected that the system have as little downtime as is possible. The administrator will also be responsible for system backups and protecting data integrity. SAP Basis administrators will also need to monitor error and early warning reports and troubleshoot them. In some cases, they will need to change settings and design minor customizations for the company'a needs.

A SAP basis administrator will be expected to attend continuing education conferences and seminars to keep up with the latest changes in the software. This will help the administrator keep up with current security trends and migrate the data during software updates.

A SAP Basis administrator will be expected to be fluent in Oracle, server design and maintenance, database creation and maintenance, UNIX, and SAP Basis. Most employers prefer a bachelor's degree in computer science.
