Dream Job
Money you can't live on...
Veterinary Technologist / Technician - Ontario, Canada
I have been an RVT for 7 years- this is not a job that you can make a living at. I do love my career- it is very interesting and I'm constantly learning new things and can play with animals on a daily basis. However, love does not pay the bills! For the amount of work us techs do- we are never adequately paid for it! I take x-rays, get blood, run blood and fecals and urine, I talk to clients, I lift dogs over 100 lbs, make sure the clinic is adequately stocked, intubate, trouble shoot with the EKG machine, monitor GAs, perform dental prophies, client education, etc. etc! The amount of money a tech will make is only good as a second income. You cannot live on what a tech makes unless you are married or living with someone who makes more. Just because you love your job- you should not live in poverty! As long as there is no law stating that a vet hospital must hire an RVT- we will not be paid adequately! While a vet can hire someone off the street- who has only just finished high school- show them how to look through a microscope and turn on an x-ray machine and call themselves a "vet tech"- An RVT will not be adequately paid and the average life span of an RVT will continue to be 5 years until they move onto something else (ie. sales). I myself am going back to school as I would like to one day move out of my parent's basement.

Follow the dream or pick a career for the sake of advancing
Illustrator - (City withheld for privacy), Alberta, Canada
Don't know if I should be giving advice, was more looking for some. I have had ideas for careers over the years, searched the schooling, salaries, and loans necessary. I've also had job offers that could produce a more than sufficient income for the future. But, I've held off in hopes of actually making a great living doing the thing I love to do as oppose to working to live. I think true success will come from loving your work. I would love to be a prosperous illustrator for books, cd covers, posters, etc.

It it a wise option to make sure you have ITIL Cerification, as well as any other Certificates you can obtain

Poeple Skills are your best asset for this type of work.

I spent 8 years honing my people skill in the hospitality industry before going back to school to get a Diploma in LAN Administration.

After a couple of years doing contract work, I landed a career at EDS Canada as a Network Analyst. In this position I was responcible for communicating directly with both clients and vendors. The whole time was used to increase my people skills. After 2 years I was moved from the Network Analyst position the the TAC (Technical Assistance Center Team Lead on a major Government contract.

As a Prodution Managr you must be will to do 24/7 on call duties, this is inparrative to success.

Making the most out of your day!
Account Executive, Inside Sales - (City withheld for privacy), British Columbia, Canada
Most of us, for whatever reason have never found our dream job. I think that is because we are afraid to venture out of what we already know.

If you are truly seeking that dream job, you need to put away those fears of failure. You have to really look deep inside yourself, and say "What is is that I want to do every day", "What do I love to do". You need to look at those things, and than study the options that are available.

Once you have done some research, it is time to make a list! Weigh the pro's and con's in all your options. Than choose a career based on those , that is truly right for you.

After you have done all that.... the hard part begins! At this point, you need to take a good look at yourself, and determine what it is you need to do to get there... AND DO IT!

Never let the world hold you back. At times it may seem tedious, hard, or downright impossible. Never give up! In the end you will be happier, not only with your career, but with yourself!

Focus on goals and long term dreams.
Vice President (VP) Finance & Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - (City withheld for privacy), Alberta, Canada
A person needs a vision that will lead to one achieving his or her goal/ambition/dream. The vision should cause an inner excitement, a longing, inner enthusiasm, anticipation, dedication, and satisfaction. The vision needs to be communicated to oneself often so it can be seen with the eyes, chewed on with the imagination, considered with the intellect, and...confidently believable in one's faith.
