The job of Accounts Payable Clerk is an indoor desk job, and the work is primarily mental. The job is full-time, and Accounts Payable Clerks are usually considered part of the support staff of their company. Companies in many different industries have this position.
Accounts Payable Clerks may perform a variety of bookkeeping or customer service tasks over the course of a day. They keep track of the accounts that their company has to pay out to employees, other individuals, or other entities with which the company does business. Accounts Payable is a significant section of many legally required financial statements in the U.S., and this clerk keeps that in order. The Accounts Payable Clerk reconciles all the accounts payable, checking all entries against the official balance and verifying that all transactions are done in keeping with the company’s financial procedures and legal requirements. They are responsible for recording and filing invoices and entering all relevant information into Accounts Payable, and may have additional responsibilities as well.
They generally work as part of a team under an Accounts Payable Supervisor, and often cooperate with the accounting or finance departments of the company. They may have to communicate with customers inside and outside of the company as well. Strong verbal communication skills are needed, and most companies ask that the Accounts Payable Clerk have experience with Microsoft Office products or similar office software. An advanced degree is not typically needed, though many companies prefer an associate’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, and often request one to two years of prior experience.
