Try to get practical experience prior to finishing school. It will better prepare and inform you about where your strengths lie and what aspects of your studies you might concentrate on.
Learn to draw by hand. I know that may sound strange given that our industry calls for computer aided drafting skills, but having that skill will help in creating quick sketches for discussion and also enable you to understand the character, depth clarity to a drawing.
