Job Description for Bricklayer

The duties of a bricklayer are many and you can be involved in many different projects. Bricklayers work on sidewalks, streets, homes, walls, and more. As a bricklayer you would be responsible to get supplies ready and to cut bricks and other materials to fit the project that you are working on. You could be building anything from a chimney to a fireplace to entire buildings. You will need to know how to read and follow blue prints and to follow precise directions. You will also need to be prepared to work in a variety of weather conditions from extreme heat to freezing temperatures. Bricklayers are often times referred to masons or brick masons and you can be a union or a non union worker. It will be your responsibility to cut the bricks either by pounding them or by cutting them with a chisel or saw. You will need to know how to be safe when you are using tools like those as well as know how to build a wall or project that will be safe and high quality. Not only do you need to know how to read blue prints but you will need physical strength and endurance to do many of these jobs that go with brick laying. You will also work many long and odd hours to complete jobs on time and to do them at a time that works for the project managers. There are no real educational requirements to become a brick layer however most places prefer at least a high school diploma.
