Job Description for Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

Environmental Health and Safety Managers (EHS) help ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. They develop a formal sustainability program to be used company wide. They conduct environmental surveys using collected information to manage risks within the company. They monitor and reduce environmental waste; radiation, chemical waste, and pollution. They safely prepare hazardous material for shipping and disposal. They advocate a safe work environment for all employees. They possess the communication skills to relate safety issues proficiently and correctly in a timely manner. They create a systematic approach to dealing with waste while reducing the companies carbon foot print. They are mostly employed by private compliance agencies, but may also work for public agencies such as Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). They develop recommendations on how to improve environmental conditions to help avoid hazards. They identify potentially hazardous biological, chemical and radiological materials and collect samples of them for analysis. They are proficient enough with math and science skills to compile and assess technical data. Have completed a bachelor’s program in any of the science majors such as geology or chemistry, or even been certified through an accredited university with on the job training follow-ups. They maintain various licensures through yearly refresher courses. They also conduct diverse environmental tests for such things as, asbestos and other air quality issues. They must also inspect the facility to eliminate work place hazards such as incorrect working methods, incorrect materials being used, or even the use of potentially toxic materials. They also give recommendations for educating employees on how to keep themselves and their workplace safe through the use of safety training programs.
Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager Tasks
  • Educate, train, and provide support to operations in the development and execution of consistent safety and environmental management programs.
  • Direct accident investigation programs, develop accident trends, and develop programs for improving performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental programs.
  • Direct a proactive safety and environmental program.
  • Improve the quality of safety and environmental management processes following established regulations, policies, standards, and practices.
