Executive Director Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Executive Director in Hamilton:
"How difficult people are to manage."
Keep an even and simple approach to challenges. All day is chaotic, enjoy the good days, appreciate people and always be prepared.

Executive Director in Milton:
"Daily responsibilities increased significantly."
Know what all the issues are and develop a plan early.

Executive Director in Charlottetown:
"My Managers Did not Always Know Best."
I started in a rigid employment environment (UK Civil Service) and was led to believe that each person in a higher grade had more knowledge, expertise and experience than those in a lower grade. This was nonsense and I realized as I progressed that each person in my team was vital to my own success or otherwise. A simple hello to a security guard or janitor would come back later in many ways that were not considered at that moment. The bottom line with this was that when I said hello or asked how someone's day was going I meant it. You cannot truly fake sincerity or caring!

Executive Director in Winnipeg:
"Your employment becomes your cause, you can get swallowed."
Be prepared for long hours, lines blurred between professional and personal time, volatile board member personalities, conflicts, competition, emotional exhaustion, size matters, and much more. Very important to remember, "It is not what you are 'selling' but what they are 'buying'". Relationship development must usually precede significant ask for financial support. Friend-raising before fund-raising.

Executive Director in Winnipeg:
"Share my knowledge."
Be a visionary and advocate.

Executive Director in Carman:
"Job Diversity."
Agriculture is always changing and with that means that your position within the organization is evolving. The job description I applied for has changed drastically over the past 5 years and for me that has allowed me to gain additional skills and knowledge on various areas within a commodity organization and the impact to a primary producer.

Executive Director in Kelowna:
Be unafraid of risks and be prepared to make hard calls.
