Orthodontists help to straighten teeth for people of all ages. They do a lot of their work on braces. Sometimes an orthodontist is able to step in and fix the teeth before having to go through dental surgery. An orthodontist fits dental appliances in patients' mouths in order to alter the position and relationship of teeth and jaws, and to realign teeth. He or she also diagnoses teeth and jaw or other dental-facial abnormalities. An orthodontist examines patients in order to assess abnormalities of jaw development, tooth position, and other dental-facial structures. Orthodontist can install braces for people of all ages. This is a position that requires a three to four year graduate degree at a dental school and well as at least two years in the residency program that is commissioned by the American Dental Association. To maintain a license and keep\ up to date about new diseases and treatment, ongoing education is required. Being an orthodontist can be a tedious and somewhat challenging occupation. However, the feeling of knowing that you are helping others to look and feel better about themselves is a reward that greatly outweighs many other factors.
