Job Description for Privacy Manager

A privacy manager creates and modifies the privacy policy for a company and maintains compliance with local laws and regulations. The privacy manager also enforces the privacy policies. When incidents occur, the privacy manager will start an investigation and will monitor, track, and solve privacy issues.

The data dealt with can be physical or electronic. Report-making skills are necessary to be able to gather data and to present the findings to upper management. Training of personnel might be a part of this job, as well as educating employees on the privacy policy. Therefore, creativity and public-speaking skills will come in handy. Periodically, audits regarding the privacy policy will be carried out, so the privacy manager must create audit plans. Occasionally, the privacy policy should be evaluated for efficiency and should be modified with the approval of upper management. Risks that may arise should to be discovered, and methods to prevent the risks from becoming a reality should be instilled. In companies that design software or other products, the privacy manager may be asked for input as to whether or not the privacy standards are ideal.

Usually, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for this job. Experience with compliance and legal matters is usually needed. Strong computer skills may be required, in order to be able to test databases and other software and make sure that matters relating to privacy are working as they should.
