A market manager oversees the daily operations of their department in a specific geographical region. Market managers are responsible for identifying and securing new business leads, as well as negotiating contracts to suit business standards. Cold calling is sometimes required. They are also held accountable for department profits and losses, and they are expected to make sound business decisions to help meet or exceed revenue goals. Market manager are also responsible for building customer loyalty by ensuring consistent operating conditions and providing new and appealing products. Market managers do most of their work in an office environment; however, many market managers work from a home office. Work hours vary by company and throughout the work week depending on client and staff needs.
A market manager is expected to use solid leadership skills on a daily basis to effectively guide their team. Strong oral and written communication skills are needed, as market managers regularly interact with staff, as well as potential and existing clients. These managers should have good presentation skills, flexibility, and the ability to creatively when dealing with problems.
Typically, the market manager position requires previous experience in marketing, hospitality, and/or sales. Depending on the company's needs, anything from a high school diploma or equivalent to an master's of business administration (MBA) may be needed; most often, a bachelor’s degree is the educational requirement. Proficiency in SalesForce and basic computer software such as the Microsoft Office suite is also needed.
