Job Description for UNIX System Administrator

A UNIX systems administrator must be knowledgeable with the UNIX operating system. This is imperative, as the duties of this administrator include installing, configuring, and maintaining the UNIX operating system and all other applications as needed. This worker will be responsible for identifying and troubleshooting all server hardware issues and correcting any problems with application software. In accordance with all of the above, UNIX systems administrator is also responsible for documentation regarding standards and procedures.
A person employed in this position can expect to work in an indoor environment, and more specifically an office. A UNIX systems administrator can expect to be employed in the information technology field, will often work alongside software developers and engineers, and will be managed by project managers at software firms.
The educational requirements for this position are typically a bachelor's degree in computer science, and there are IT certifications that many UNIX system administrators will hold, such as COMP TIA A+ certification, but it is not a requirement throughout the information technology industry.
A typical workday for UNIX system administrators is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, as they typically work within software firms and these are their typical hours. If the servers crash, this worker will be required to fix the servers in a very efficient manner. If the servers do not crash, the responsibilities for the day may be as simple as preventing the servers from crashing by providing necessary upgrades in the form of hardware and software.

  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade Unix server operating systems and applications.
  • Establish and document standards and procedures.
