Job Description for Energy Analyst

Energy analysts develop and maintain a high-level understanding of energy markets, providing information and analysis to their company and/or clients. These professionals perform data modeling and stay up-to-date on relevant issues and trends within the energy sector. They must present forecasting reports, data, and information on trends in a format that is useful and easily understood to their clients. Additionally, these analysts use the information they have gathered and knowledge of the industry to make recommendations to clients as needed. This is generally a full-time position that takes place in an office setting, although overtime and work outside of regular business hours may be required based on the needs of their business. These individuals may work with many different clients or for one employer.

Energy analyst positions generally require at least a bachelor's degree in a related field, although a master's degree is strongly preferred. They should have at least three years of experience in a related analysis position. Energy analysts must have an extensive knowledge of energy sector and have an advanced knowledge of computer programs used to model their data for analysis. Additionally, these analysts need to be able to coordinate work with team members, have strong communication skills, and work well on their own with minimal supervision.

Energy Analyst Tasks
  • Perform field testing and analyze data to determine energy consumption, comparing current and historical usage rates.
  • Facilitate energy usage communication and education between organizations.
  • Develop and implement energy saving initiatives, identifying helpful technologies and possible challenges.
  • Generate energy usage audit reports and deliver findings to management.
