Job Description for Managing Director, Sales & Marketing

The managing director of sales and marketing often is responsible for planning sales, marketing, and product development projects, as well as guiding their implementation over the short- and long-term. The managing director often performs some outreach and sales duties themselves, although they more often directs the work of subordinates. This job is usually performed in an office setting, although the managing director sometimes will travel to job locations away from their home office.
The essential duties involved in this position are wide and vary, but ultimately focus on moving their business forward in terms of sales and marketing. In most cases, these duties include development and implementation of marketing and sales plans, as well as forecasting in relation to meeting the employer’s objectives. Direct supervision of subordinates is common to ensure proper performance and provide direction as necessary. Often, the managing director of sales and marketing also monitors competitors' products and sales, and determines strategies to outperform those competitors. Recruiting employees is a common duty as well.
Educational requirements for the position of managing director of sales and marketing commonly include a bachelor’s degree in sales, marketing, or a related area of study. Prior experience in the field, along with increasing and demonstrable management responsibilities, is usually required as well.
Managing Director, Sales & Marketing Tasks
  • Oversee the competitive positioning of the organization; including the analysis and collection of market data.
  • Develop objectives and policies for the sales and marketing department, and measurements.
  • Oversee staff operations, business planning, budget development and expenditures toward achievement of objectives.
  • Plan and set the marketing and sales direction and strategy.
  • Act as subject matter expert to senior leadership on issues relating to sales and marketing.
