Job Description for Security Manager

Security managers are employed in a range of industries, from retail to computer technology. Because the work can vary greatly, some employers require that applicants have a bachelor's degree in management, while others prefer work experience over education; this is a managerial position, so most employers require anywhere between three and ten years of experience.

Some organizations require their security managers to be proficient in basic office software, such as Microsoft Office programs, while others require proficiency with more advanced software. Other organizations may require certain licenses, such as CPR or a driver's license. Security managers are generally expected to streamline their companies' security processes, regardless of the industry.

Those in this position are often required to make plans and schedules and assign roles to security detail and contracted employees. Depending on the employer, they may also be required to respond to emergency calls and administer first-aid if necessary. These managers often oversee the implementation of plans related to safety, such as universal training programs for employees; they also perform audits and ensure that employees under their supervision adhere to proper protocols and regulations. Depending on the scale of the organization, the security manager may be the only one in the facility or work alongside other security managers to achieve goals.
