Human resources (HR) managers work with a team of professionals to support a company's growth and operation. HR managers oversee daily operations, business planning, and budget development for human resources programs. Responsibilities also include advising and coaching managers on company policies for human resources and programs including issues with employee relations. HR managers plan, oversee and coordinate all department initiatives including recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, retention and employee relations for a company. They also ensure that all human resources policies, procedures, and programs are consistently administered and enforced in line with the company's goals, compliance with various professional standards and any state or federal regulations. An undergraduate degree in business, human resources, or a related field is usually required for HR managers as well as several years of experience in the human resources field. Other combinations of education and experience that provide the rudimentary knowledge and skills to function efficiently in the role may be an acceptable substitute. HR managers constantly use computers, so familiarity with email, word processor programs and other common computer software is required. HR managers also need to be familiar with the use of printers, scanners, copiers and other essential office equipment. They stay informed on labor laws and up-to-date on training requirements, changes to employee benefits--such as insurance, staffing needs of the company, and any performance issues experienced by the business. HR managers can expect to work typical business hours, with some overtime or weekend work.
