A portfolio analyst holds an advanced position in finance. The duties of the portfolio analyst vary greatly according to the specific needs of their employer and industry, but these professionals are generally responsible for using appropriate investment tools to carefully prepare reports and detailed analysis on portfolios. They are in charge of conducting research on economic and business interests, as well as remaining up to date on all industry and legal changes or any other matters which may affect the portfolio. Individuals in this position also maintain records and databases, communicate with clients, and perform industry-specific duties. Portfolio analyst positions frequently require extensive use of investment software and systems specific to the company. The portfolio analyst often works as part of a team and may report to the portfolio manager.
A portfolio analyst is typically expected to have at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting, economics, finance, or a related field. A master's of business administration (MBA) may be preferred. Some companies require as much as four years’ related experience, and frequently portfolio analysts have previous experience as financial analysts. A portfolio analyst must have a high level of understanding of investments and often of their specific industry. Attention to detail and strong analytical skills are important, and a strong working knowledge of basic computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite is essential; the ability to use specific investment software may also be necessary. The portfolio analyst may work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment, coordinating with a team, and some positions involve significant travel.
