Job Description for Head of IT & Infrastructure

Heads of information technology (IT) and infrastructure are responsible for managing all IT requests within their organization, as well as planning and deploying infrastructure features for their organization. They are in charge of evaluating hardware and software platforms, analyzing their performance, and recommending changes based on their experience and project requirements. Heads of IT and infrastructure provide leadership by motivating a group of computer specialists in the creation and implementation of support management systems. They also evaluate project status and report their progress to upper management within their company.

One of these professionals' main tools is a personal computer, which they use to keep accurate records of all infrastructure plans and information technology products needed. Heads of IT and infrastructure must provide excellent customer service and interact in a professional manner with all internal leaders and external vendors. These individuals also deal with delivery teams in their organization and ensure system stability, as well as strong security standards. They access and prioritize updates and system modifications, and they must provide support and expertise to other IT specialists in the appraisal and performance feedback processes. These leaders are also in charge of preparing operational budgets, as well as calculating and recording expenses.

A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field is generally required for this job. Previous experience - including in a managerial capacity - is needed as well.
Head of IT & Infrastructure Tasks
  • Manage business continuity and disaster recovery planning as well as system security and data confidentiality.
  • Coordinate and manage IT professionals in departments such as systems engineering, communications, and data management.
  • Plan, develop, and oversee company IT networks, including telecommunications, database management, networks, and IT support.
  • Act as a liaison with vendors supplying IT related products, and negotiate contracts for equipment and services.
