Senior environmental health and safety (EHS) engineers are responsible for implementing environmental health and safety policies on behalf of their organization. They are in charge of leading a group of engineers to find optimal health- and safety-related solutions before the release of products and services. They must follow all company procedures and meet all legal requirements for environmental health and safety standards. Senior EHS engineers also oversee the research process in which other EHS engineers look for innovative ways to protect the environment and public safety. Additionally, these engineers actively participate in safety meetings to recommend procedure changes and conduct health assessments as needed. Senior EHS engineers also develop and administer environmental and safety programs for their company. They are in charge of analyzing existing and planned products, processes, equipment, and facilities to prevent injuries, property loss, and impact on the environment. They also recognize and evaluate environmental, health, and safety risks, as well as report their progress and escalate issues with the (EHS) manager in their department.
A bachelor's of engineering in environmental health and safety is required for this position. Work experience in an engineering capacity is necessary as well. Industry and leadership certifications may be preferred. Senior EHS engineers must possess strong interpersonal skills to communicate with other team members, as well as create strong business relationship with external partners. They need to pay close attention to detail to identify possible engineering flaws, be organized, and be able to multitask in a variety of projects at once.
Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer Tasks
- Define and implement monitoring and sampling plans, including outcomes of analysis.
- Conduct health and safety audits, and inspect work place and records and collecting samples.
- Provide technical expertise for OSHA regulation implementation, emergency response, accident investigations, hygiene, and ergonomics.
- Conduct training and document procedures for improving health and safety.
