Job Description for Performance Improvement Specialist

Performance improvement specialists are employed primarily in the health care field and work by improving patient care in a variety of ways. Some positions require applicants to have a bachelor's degree in health care administration, while others require a nursing degree to be able to audit patient charts and carry out detailed analyses regarding the administered care. Some employers may have lower requirements and ask only for a high school diploma.

Great customer service skills are important in this position, as these specialists are usually expected to address comments and concerns from patients and their families. They must be both compassionate and professional to be able to solve any problems that may arise. Strong teamwork skills are also important to be able to utilize appropriate resources when resolving these issues.

In some positions, performance improvement specialists are expected to develop evaluation-methods and standards which can be objectively analyzed. They may even have to create and implement plans for improvement. Some in this position may also be involved in training new employees, especially when gaps in employee-knowledge are identified or new material must be introduced. Strong computer skills in applications such as Microsoft Office are often required, as these specialists often have to type reports and may also have data entry work.

  • Assess institution performance and volume load to target areas for improvement.
