Job Description for Postal Service Clerk

Education and Certification requirements entail that all postal service clerks successfully complete and pass a written examination. Test scores will then be evaluated for further employment consideration. Pre-employment drug screening is a mandatory requirement for all postal service positions.

Postal service clerk positions necessitate a significant quantity of both mental and physical abilities. Typically, efficient service and a friendly demeanor are expected. This position includes a lot of interaction with the general public. A postal service clerk also works closely with other postal service employees to efficiently provide necessary services to all customers. These services include sorting and placing mail in P.O. boxes, selling P.O. boxes, selling various stamps, selling various shipping supplies and products, processing payments, and hand delivering packages and registered mail. Clerks have the ability to sell money orders to customers as well. Basic cleaning of lobby areas throughout the shift is necessary, including organizing items and emptying garbage cans in the reception area. Postal service clerks are required to be skilled at using a cash register to make change and answering customer questions.

Postal service clerks can work varying hours that depend on when the post office they work for is open. Some postal service clerks work full-time, and other work part-time. Training is provided to all postal service clerk employees by the postal service system.
