Job Description for Oracle Database Administrator (DBA)

Oracle database administrators or DBAs solely support Oracle databases and often the product data management systems, websites and software applications that access Oracle.
Oracle database administrators will perform the initial installation of Oracle and upgrade existing databases to new Oracle versions. They will backup the systems regularly and perform restorations as needed.
Day-to-day activities include deleting records on request, unlocking records and correcting database entries as required. Database performance tuning involves adjusting session parameters to balance demand and access by the user community, such as limiting the number of database queries each user can have running simultaneously or shortening the interval before an inactive session is terminated. They will manage user accounts, create new ones, modify access permissions for existing users, and delete those that no longer require access.
Security is an increasingly important function for Oracle DBAs, from installing security patches to checking user access logs and database connections for suspicious activity. The task of creating and maintaining logs of administrative password changes and system audits may fall to the DBA when the database must meet ISO or other IT security standards. Oracle DBAs may be required to verify that the access controls to protect the data such as financial information or personally identifiable information offer adequate protection against unauthorized access.
Oracle DBAs may be asked to install related software like Active Directory or Single Sign On to control access to the Oracle database. Generating new reports and modifying existing Oracle database reports are standard tasks for DBAs. The Oracle database administrator will ensure that the database is thoroughly tested before a new database version goes online. The Oracle DBA may have the job of cloning the existing database to create a "sandbox" or test database for software testers and developers. The DBA can modify the archive partitions within the database to archive older records to speed up queries and report generation against the active partitions. Oracle DBAs can also scale up the database as more memory is assigned or physical memory is added to the server.
Qualifications for an Oracle DBA position generally start with a bachelor's degree in computer science or computer engineering. There are additional certifications offered by Oracle to identify those familiar with its databases and related applications.
