Job Description for Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Lead Tester

Developing software programs often requires millions of lines of coding, and testing and quality assurance are essential. A software quality assurance (SQA) lead tester ensures that the software functions as intended before it is released to the enterprise or retail sales markets.

The lead tester is normally a position in the quality assurance (QA) department that has supervisory responsibility. As such, this person normally assigns duties to the rest of the QA team, such as implementing test runs and evaluating function abnormalities and deviances from expected outputs. In the case of multiple builds, the lead tester works to make sure they are efficiently tested by the team by assigning and moving QA testers from project to project as needed.

The SQA lead tester is also expected to make personnel decisions for the QA team, as well as help keep all assigned projects on schedule. Additionally, they must ensure the SQA team adheres to best practices in all aspects of testing and report findings, needs, and future requirements to engineers as promptly as possible. The lead tester may be asked to perform other management duties for his or her department, such as budgeting and scheduling, as well.

This position requires a strong educational background in computer technology or information technology (IT), typically either a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related vocational/technical schooling, along with relevant certifications. Related work experience of at least two to five years is desired.
