Job Description for Marketing Assistant

The potential duties of a marketing assistant vary according to the needs of the specific organization but include participating in various marketing activities and policies to promote the company's products and services. Some marketing assistants work more independently and take greater ownership for projects; such positions are more likely to require a bachelor's degree and more experience. Other smaller companies may employ marketing assistants with a high-school degree, including current college students with some marketing or sales experience. There are no specific certifications or licenses necessary to become a marketing assistant.
Generally speaking, a marketing assistant must be creative and able to think outside of the box when developing and implementing marketing strategies. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to provide good customer service are extremely important. Attention to detail is also important. A marketing assistant must be knowledgeable about the products or services a given company is selling. Most positions also require relevant technological ability including, for example, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, or WordPress.
A marketing assistant will provide administrative support to the marketing department by preparing reports, handling information requests, performing clerical functions, and will sometimes handle event planning or travel coordination/arrangements. Another area of responsibility is market research, including such activities as conducting surveys or gathering information on competitors and methods of marketing and distribution. A marketing assistant may often be involved in or primarily responsible for promotion, including utilizing social media such as Facebook, a company website, or web advertising. Other promotional activities include calling potential customers, designing literature and distributing it by direct mail or email marketing. The schedule will vary according to company needs; some marketing assistants work 8 to 5 while some smaller companies may just have part-time positions.
