Health safety advisors are responsible for facilitating a healthy and safe environment for the employees at their company. Careers are available in nearly every industry; as such, additional certification or education may be required depending on the industry. In entry-level positions, health safety advisors are generally expected to hold at least a bachelor's degree in a health or science related field. Various certifications are required for entry-level work, OSHA being key among them. Other certification requirements are dependent upon the field of employment.
Health safety advisors work with a wide range of people. Because their key function is to collect and interpret data relating to employee safety and health at the workplace, they commonly give presentations and send out memos to all of the employees at a company, including both the higher management and entry-level workers. Other duties include preventing job site injuries, hosting seminars on personal health and hygiene, monitoring employees to watch for signs of unsafe or unhealthy behavior, keeping records, submitting claims, enacting policies to mitigate injury, and more.
Health safety advisors are must be meticulous in their calculations, highly organized, and comfortable presenting scientific information in common terms. They will often work with outside consultants, including local law authorities and insurance claims representatives. Health safety advisors should demonstrate superior management and moderation skills, and be personable and approachable.
Because of the nature of their work, health safety advisors can be a dedicated employee to a specific company, or they can be hired as a consultant. In most cases, health safety advisors' workdays will be spent going over reports, submitting claims, reviewing employee behavior and collecting relevant data. When health safety advisors work as consultants, they will likely spend several weeks observing employees and company policies before making their reports and presenting the data to the observed companies and employees.
