Laboratory managers oversee the day-to-day operations of laboratories. They develop procedures and maintain quality standards for specific lab procedures. Laboratory managers work in a variety of settings from universities to medical facilities to pharmaceutical corporations, and they must work well with project teams. Laboratory managers also work in the manufacturing industry, primarily in research and development. They typically work in laboratories during regular business hours.
As the lead in projects, laboratory managers ensure safety requirements are met, procedures are outlined and followed, and trainings are up to date. Laboratory managers work with project team members, such as laboratory technicians. They will oversee and coordinate all aspects of a given project while maintaining adherence to lab requirements. While not specifically using the equipment, they spend their time coordinating details to provide accurate results while following procedures.
Laboratory managers must have a proven problem-solving skills with five or more years' experience in a laboratory setting. Some positions require 10 to 15 years of experience in specialized fields, such as research and development. Laboratory managers are required to have a bachelor's of science in microbiology, chemistry, or chemical engineering. Although not required, a master's degree is preferred. They must also have technical experience, including laboratory design with the ability to write a clear scientific standard procedures and good laboratory practice (GLP).
