Quality control managers work in a wide variety of industries and production settings. A quality control manager first samples or tests the product; they analyze the product from the eyes of a consumer and make recommendations on how to improve production and the product. Quality control managers must write detailed reports on the production process and the product they are examining, and they must be able to explain technical concepts in an understandable way to their managers.
Quality control managers may also perform supervisory duties, providing guidance, feedback, and mentorship to lover-level employees or subordinates. These professionals also are expected to offer suggestions on how to improve products or processes, and they may be required to provide direct, hands-on instruction to employees involved in the production process.
Quality control managers typically need a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and/or substantial experience in their field. Specific training is often needed for the job, such as statistical analysis, which often starts in college. Often, to become a quality control manager, one must spend years in their specific field.
Quality Control Manager Tasks
- Monitor and train team of managers and inspectors, and develop rapport with owners, resource suppliers, and contractors.
- Design and implement a Quality Control Plan and ensure its annual update and approval according to government regulations.
- Evaluate existing procedures, recommend revisions, and conduct internal audits to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Provide support for new projects and coordinate with the production teams and personnel to troubleshoot licensing or compliance issues.
