Job Description for Stylist

Stylists generally works with hair, although fashion stylist positions exist as well. Hair stylists must be licensed to cut hair and have attended a stylist college. These professionals work in salons and carry out duties such as cutting and trimming, shampooing, dying, and straightening and perming hair. Fashion stylists generally work in stores to help customers pick out clothing that compliments their style and preferences.

Both hair and fashion stylists must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. They need to be able to listen to customers’ concerns and build on them with suggestions and discussion. Stylists must offer products (including attempting to upsell any designated products) while being sensitive to the customers’ needs. Fashion stylists may also be tasked with putting together attractive displays and placing outfits on mannequins to attract customers to the store and offer visual style suggestions. Stylists also help keep the store clean and well organized. In any type of stylist position, the stylist may have to follow a stylist guide and be able to build on this guide with creativity.

In many positions, the stylist is required to operate the cash register as well. Therefore, previous experience handling monetary transactions may be beneficial or preferred. Usually, a high school diploma or equivalent is required for a stylist position. Previous experience may be required or preferred as well. Both part-time and full-time positions are available, and schedules vary depending on their employer's hours of operation.
