Job Description for Physician / Doctor, General Practice

The main task of a general practitioner, or general physician, is to diagnose and assist patients with routine checkups and examinations. A general physician is the first person whom patients will see when an illness or ailment is troubling them. Therefore, a physician must be able to complete a number of tasks, including collecting, recording, and maintaining patient information such as medical histories, reports, and examination results. He or she must be able to explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients in a professional and open manner. A general physician must also be able to monitor patients' conditions and progress as well as continually assess the efficiency of a given course of treatment. When necessary, a general physician must also be able to refer a patient to a specialized practitioner.

A general practitioner generally works for a private clinic or hospital. The general practitioner's work is conducted entirely indoors in an examination room. He or she must be capable of working with a number of nurses, assistants, and other practitioners in order to ensure the best possible treatment for the patient. A general physician must also be able to interact with his or her patients and extract the necessary information required for diagnoses from them. The hours of general practitioner are fairly regular, working during the week from late morning until evening.

The tasks of a general practitioner are both physically and mentally demanding. A physician must be able to remain on his or her feet for long periods of time, as well as be able to lift and move heavy medical equipment. The job is also mentally strenuous, requiring the ability to diagnose any disease or ailment that a patient may present them with, along with the associated treatment. For this reason, the job of a general physician requires a large amount of education, including high school, college, medical school, and certification from medical school.
