Job Description for Sr. Network Engineer

Senior network engineers design and create computer networks within an organization and ensure that they are working properly. In some cases, they also maintain networks for third-party clients. The network should be balanced so that it works well and data flows easily; when networks are not functioning properly, the network engineer must use problem-solving skills to find a solution. It is also important to back up the systems so they can be easily restored.

Some senior network engineers are responsible for implementing security systems for networks so that data is not compromised. The work is mostly done in an office, and it may occasionally be necessary to visit various branches of the office to install hardware for a network or help other employees with issues they may have. Although some of the work is sedentary, some walking, bending, lifting, and squatting, and other physical requirements may be necessary.

Advanced computer skills are important in this position, and knowledge of server software and hardware are essential. Budget management skills are also important, as the network engineer may have to work within a budget. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field may be required for this position, though some employers accept an associate’s degree. Because this is an advanced position, senior network engineers may be expected to lead teams of lower-level network engineers.
