The assistant manager position is utilized in nearly every type of business, and assistant managers may be employed in a variety of industries, including food service, offices, medical clinics, hospitality services, and retail. They should possess a variety of skills, including leadership, organization, recruiting and training, attention to detail, customer service, and good verbal and written communication. They must also be able to effectively supervise others, act as a positive representative of their company, and set an example for those reporting to them.
Assistant managers may be tasked with handling customers' complaints, scheduling employees, training new or current employees, preparing training materials, procuring inventory, and assisting the general manager with employee performance reviews. They may also interact with customers and clients to respond to concerns, questions, or complaints.
Assistant managers may work part-time or full-time, weekdays and/or weekends, and day or night shifts. They typically report to a general manager, and their subordinates may include customer service representatives, salespeople, laborers, skilled and semi-skilled tradespeople, medical personnel, food preparers, or office workers.
Assistant managers may have any level of education and experience. Typically, a high school diploma and one to five years of experience in the field are minimum requirements, and required education and experience are often commensurate with the field. For example, assistant managers in retail or food service may require minimal education and experience, while positions in medical or tech companies may require higher education, industry-specific experience, and specialized certifications or training.
