Security managers in information technology (IT) work for a variety of organizations, both governmental and private, by managing and supervising computer systems/software engineers, programmers, and other staff. Ultimately, they are responsible for the security of their company's computer systems and must be capable of anticipating and detecting possible breaches and intrusions using complex equipment and detection methodologies.
IT security managers direct their staff to install and calibrate computer security software on a regular basis. They generally delegate assignments to staff members to implement and design preventive measures for their computer systems, and check in with them regularly regarding project deadlines. They themselves usually report to upper-level managers.
Those in this position must always stay up-to-date with current technologies and new possible threats to their computer systems, and may even be responsible for hiring vendors or contractors if necessary.
A bachelor's degree in computer science or computer engineering and relevant work experience are generally required for this position, and some employers may prefer those with master's degrees. Strong written verbal and communication skills are important, and these managers are required to attend various education workshops and conferences to stay up-to-date with emerging threats to their company's cyber-security. Some travel may be required depending on the nature and size of the organization, and high security clearance may be required for some positions.
