Job Description for Senior Instrumentation Engineer

Senior instrumentation engineers are the leaders of a team of instrumentation engineers. They are involved in the development, testing and repair of the myriad electronic tools businesses use to operate and facilitate all of their duties. This may be something common like a calculator or it may be a specifically designed machine that helps produce a particular item that a company manufactures.
Senior instrumentation engineers may work with very small instruments or pieces at times so they must be very dexterous with their hands. Some instruments they design while others they install or repair. They often test instruments as well to make sure everything is functioning properly. Their work tools include many different hand tools, soldering guns, electronic tools that read other electrical systems and normal office supplies such as a computer, telephone, pens and paper.
Senior instrumentation engineers usually have their own office. Their work hours are usually standard business hours Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m. They generally report to a Director of Operations or a General Manager. A bachelor's or master's degree in industrial or mechanical engineering is usually required for senior instrumentation engineers. Several years of experience in instrumentation engineering are also required.
