Job Description for Technical Operations Manager

A technical operations manager is a leadership position in the technical department of an organization. These individuals are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing organizational technical processes from start to finish. Technical operations managers are responsible for maintaining the technical goals of the company and address any future potential needs. They are also responsible for making sure that all staff is working strictly within technical guidelines of project management and operational governance.

Technical operations managers work with various technical staff, including engineers, project managers, and outside clients. Since this is a leadership position, technical operations managers are responsible for delivering advice and direction to technical staff in times of uncertainty; this requires that technical operations managers to be excellent communicators and team builders. Typically, technical operations managers work in an office environment during regular business hours. Overtime and work on weekends could be required deadlines and for other important functions.

The qualifications for technical operations managers vary from company to company but the basic minimum qualifications generally are a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology (IT) project management, or related technical field. Along with the educational experience, prospective technical operations managers usually must have at least four to five years of experience in a technical leadership position. Other qualifications, such as technical certifications, may be required by some companies.

  • Manage installation technicians, lead technicians, project managers and control system programmers.
