Most companies which sell physical goods require warehouse premises. Larger warehouses often have not only a warehouse manager to supervise this area, but also an assistant warehouse manager who reports directly to that person. The assistant warehouse manager does have some supervisory responsibilities, and may also act as a liaison between employees and the warehouse manager. The assistant and manager work hand-in-hand to ensure that the warehouse facility operates as safely and efficiently as possible.
Warehouse managers may delegate a number of responsibilities to their assistants, which may include inventory totals, inspection of goods, and immediate reports of any losses or damages. The assistant may also help examine pick efficiency (how long it takes warehouse workers to locate and pull particular goods from the warehouse and prepare them for shipping), and work to devise strategies to improve this aspect of production.
Additionally, the assistant warehouse manager helps ensure a safe workplace; this can include responsibilities such as training employees on safe lifting, equipment operation, and other necessary procedures. The assistant is expected to be constantly aware of issues like wet floors or temperature fluctuations (especially in food warehouses) and report them immediately.
The educational requirements to be an assistant warehouse manager are not strict, although many companies may prefer some vocational training beyond a high school diploma due to the intricacy of the job's mathematics and safety procedures. Many companies will promote hourly warehouse employees to this position to start them on a management track within the organization. Most assistant warehouse managers work shifts which may have them in a warehouse floor environment on any day, evening, or even night, depending on the particular company.
