Mechanical design engineers are essential to any industry that uses machinery for production or operations. They are responsible for creating and building new machines or improving on current ones. Their job supports the growth of technology and the increase in efficiency in production for many industries.
Mechanical design engineers design any machinery that requires power to run. This includes generators, engines, motors, and other mechanical tools. Mechanical design engineers begin by drawing plans that are much like a blueprint. They then build their initial piece in development and test the new machine. Mechanical design engineers also have an alternative method for testing, which involves running computer simulations. During this process, they find out where the machine needs to be improved and then fix those areas. Mechanical design engineers typically work with a team with others of the same position, as well as different types of engineers. Some work for companies and develop machinery privately, while others may work for consulting businesses that design machines for many other businesses. The work environment is usually a mixture of several locations. Mechanical design engineers work in an office, in conference rooms, and in testing or production facilities. The working hours are usually Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tools of use vary depending on what types of machines the mechanical design engineer is developing, but the job usually requires a large assortment of hand tools. Mechanical design engineers also use computers, design software, telephones, pens and paper, and other common office supplies. They usually report to a supervisor of operations or a general manager.
Required for this position is at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Many positions require a master's degree in this field. Mechanical design engineers must always be licensed as a mechanical design engineer in the state that they work in.
Mechanical design engineers are the brains behind any machine that is created. It is their skills, knowledge, and intuition that continue to drive the improvement of machines and new technology in the mechanical world. Mechanical design engineers are largely responsible for workers in many industries being able to be as productive as they are.
Mechanical Design Engineer Tasks
- Sets the direction of the design staff to create prototypes or drawings of the design effort.
- Makes changes and corrections in the mechanical design throughout the life of the product.
- Considers performance, safety, patents, goals, and regulatory requirements when designing products or systems.
- Researches and analyzes data to determine feasibility of design effort.
