Job Description for Anesthesiologist

An anesthesiologist is a physician who is trained in the administration of drugs, pain medicine, to patients who must undergo a procedure or major surgery. An anesthesiologist is mostly seen in the operating room although some procedures are performed in the patient’s room or other medical suites... They also help patients who experience chronic pain by maintaining normality in their day to day lives. An anesthesiologist is present throughout most of the surgical procedure; from accessing the patient in pre-op all the way to the post-operative state. The anesthesiologist must be present in case a patient has an adverse reaction to the medication administered during surgery. Their job is unique and more advanced than an ordinary doctor or surgeon since they must be familiar with a patient’s illness as well as the effects the illness and medication will have on the body. Often they will require another level of testing in order to administer the proper dosage of medications many which cause full sedation. Anesthesiologists are on call most of the time since an emergency surgery could arise at any time day or night. Their schedule also includes any scheduled surgeries on the books. In addition to a college degree an anesthesiologist must endure four more years of medical school and then four more years of training in the specialty of anesthesiology. The specialty training includes one year of internship (no pay is received) followed by 3 years of residency. Further training to specialize even further is encouraged but not mandatory.
Anesthesiologist Tasks
  • Record type and amount of anesthesia administered, as well as any adverse reactions.
  • Confer with physicians or surgeons to determine post-procedure condition of patient.
  • Administer anesthetic during medical procedures, and monitor the patient to ensure correct dosage.
