Job Description for Chief Information Officer (CIO)

The role of the Chief Information Officer is to provide guidance and direction to the development and operation of their organization’s information technology infrastructure. The Chief Information Officer is the senior executive who has the responsibility for establishing, coordinating, and evaluating information technology (IT) strategy and policy for their organization. The ability to implement both short-term and long-range planning is central to company's IT growth and success.
The Chief Information Officer must also have a demonstrated understanding of the company's business processes, products, and services in order to be able to effectively supervise and manage the organization's personnel and collection of IT assets. He or she also manages development teams at both the business unit and divisional levels. This supervision of personnel and assets requires that the Chief Information Officer be involved in the hiring of IT managers, as well as the selection of the hardware, software, and technology applications used by the company.
The Chief Information Officer must have the ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels of the business structure, from non-core operations staff to the end-user of the company's products and services. Besides being a skilled public speaker, the Chief Information Officer must also have strong leadership skills and an above average understanding of finance and corporate structure. Above all, the Chief Information Officer must be passionate about the IT industry and how technology can drive and grow the business.
The Chief Information Officer has the accountability for ensuring that the company's data is secure! They must create and update data recovery plans for all business units of the company, as well as having disaster planning in place for other catastrophic events.
Chief Information Officer (CIO) Tasks
  • Provide technical expertise and industry knowledge to support sales and marketing efforts.
  • Oversee and evaluates IT operations.
  • Communicate at a senior level of the organization.
  • Establish, coordinate and evaluate information technology strategies for key products and services.
  • Oversee management of IT personnel and development teams.
