I can't stress enough how important making contacts at your workplace is. It is vital to develop good relations at work which will not only help you with development within the firm but also a good reference when you want to leave.

"Experience is Critical."
It may be difficult but it is worth trying to get into a practice and complete your higher education part time. This will enable you to apply the knowledge gained. Also the job is considerably different to the principles thought at university (in my experience), such as creating technical drawings and specification documents.
