Job Description for Graduate Civil Engineer

Working for a company as a graduate civil engineer requires not only extensive education and training in the field of civil engineering but also the ability to be highly adaptable to the needs of the employer. It requires having critical thinking skills and the confidence to work independently that require creative solutions to problems that arise. It also demands a strong ability to work others even while being independent. A high level of communication skills and fluency in writing beyond just knowing the scientific terms and formulas that obviously would be required of any civil engineer. The job of a graduate civil engineer is one that calls for many different hats to be worn. Many times the responsibilities will overlap and it requires the ability to be able to handle many duties simultaneously, so multitasking under pressure is a must. Responsibilities can include but are not limited to proposing and testing engineer projects and designs, running software models, analyzing data, writing detailed analysis reports, delegating tasks, and closely supervising all work being produced.
Many different businesses and organizations employ graduate civil engineers. Civil engineers are employed both in the public and private sectors. The government and the military always have need of civil engineers. Civil engineering has broad applications in many fields such as packaging, construction, land surveying, transportation and structural integrity, forensics, and the rapidly growing field in environmental protection and clean energy.
A graduate civil engineer must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Some organizations or state laws will require special licensing or registration in a respected academic school or research facility. Some practical work in the field is generally desired as well even if only as an internship or being involved in academic research with results that have been published.
