Information Technology (IT) Consultant Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Information Technology (IT) Consultant in London:
"Not a 9-5"
To stay on top of your game in this field, you cannot treat this job as a 9-5. There is constant self-education that is required if you don't want to fall behind the rest of the crowd. After commuting for at least 60 minutes each way, I often get home and carry on working to some degree for at least another couple of hours. There are mailing lists to read, white-papers to study and an almost endless amount of books published every few months that need consuming so that you are always one step ahead of the client and fellow consultants. You can do this job to an average level and earn a half-decent wage, but once you want to push through the 40-50k barrier you really need to work for your money.
